Morning After Pill

The  Morning After Pill is called MAP for short. The version of MAP approved by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) for over the counter sales is known as Plan B One Step which is also known  as an “emergency contraception.”  The drug used is called levonorgestrel, which is a progestin. The way the MAP works is to change the natural availability of normal female hormones in her body.  The main way Plan B One Step prevents pregnancy is by the prevention of ovulation. If this works, the egg is not released and cannot be fertilized. The second way pregnancy is prevented is by the changing of the cervical mucus, which increases the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus. Again, the egg will not be fertilized. The third method of prevention is that the fertilized egg may not be able to implant in the uterus because of changes to the lining, killing an already conceived individual.

Sad to say, Plan B One Step is available without a prescription in Canada, the fifth country to agree to allow Plan B to be sold as an over-the-counter product. Other countries where the drug is sold this way are Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and India. ( CBC news; May 16,2008)

Strangely, there is an article in March 18,2013 Life Site News that Swedish government officials are baffled at statistics that show the abortion rate has actually increased since the introduction of the morning after pill. Public health officials in Britain have been seeing a rise in the use of abortion as a contraceptive method in itself.

In order to understand more about this issue, read the complete essay, “The ‘Contraceptive Mentality’ and its consequences” by Brian Clowes. New information about exposure to STDs from Plan B use can be found at for March 29th article found here: “More People Exposed to STDs Thanks to Higher Plan B Drug Use”

Possible side effects:

Nausea ( 14 to 23 % of women)

Vomiting ( about 6% of women)

Irregular or unpredictable menstrual periods (especially on multiple uses)

Possibility of ectopic (tubal) pregnancy which means the fertilized egg stays within the fallopian tubes. An ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening.

** The side effects listed above, with the exception of the reference to a possible ectopic pregnancy, can be found at According to the website, Plan B One Step doesn’t cause an abortion.

*fertilization/conception occurs when the male gamete or sperm unites with female gamete or  the oocyte (egg) meet to form a single cell called a zygote.

*the zygote is formed within the fallopian tube and contains all the genetic material (46 chromosomes; 23 chromosomes from male and 23 chromosomes from female) called DNA which composes the new human being’s characteristics including hair colour, length of nose, fingerprint patterns, etc.

*”To accept the fact that after fertilization has taken place a new human has come into being is no longer a matter of taste or opinion…it is plain experimental evidence.” –Dr. Jerome Lejeune, “father of modern genetics”

*regardless of implantation in the uterus, the fertilized egg is an unique human being, known in science as an embryo
